France Rugby may be playing its final match without Antoine Dupont, closing a chapter where France flexed its depth in the handful of matches played without one of the world’s premier players.

And Australia Rugby is playing its final match with one of the best coaches in the world, before the national team turns the page to a new coach in 2026.

Yes, the narratives are aplenty as France hosts Australia in the final match for both teams in 2025.

For France, the year included a Six Nations championship — proving the squad could close out the title and remain competitive without Dupont. 

For Australia, early-season wins over the British and Irish Lions and the No. 1 Springboks have been buried under injuries to star players that complicated Australia's chances to pick up wins during this Autumn window.

The Last Ride Of Joe Schmidt?

Australia coach Joe Schmidt will coach his last match for Australia. 

The 60-year-old coach — who may be most responsible for the rise of Irish rugby over the last decade — took over at one of Australia’s lowest points. After a disastrous 2023 Rugby World Cup, where Australia failed to make the quarterfinals, Schmidt replaced Eddie Jones as coach.

The 2024 season saw major growing pains, but a win over England in the Nations Series a year ago gave the Wallabies real momentum heading into 2025.

That proved to be legit. 

A few weeks after Australia beat the British and Irish Lions, the Wallabies pulled off the biggest stunner in world rugby with a come-from-behind win over No. 1 South Africa in Round 1 of The Rugby Championship.

Injuries have hampered Australia’s competitiveness since beating Argentina in the TRC, but Schmidt has a chance for one last upset against France — a team that, at times, looks like the best country in the world at rugby.

Schmidt’s former Ireland assistant and Queensland Reds coach Les Kiss will take over the Wallabies in 2026. While it’s unclear if Schmidt is done for good when it comes to coaching, this ends a tenure that grew his reputation as one of the best coaches of all time.

France Looks To End Year With A Win

For 60 minutes, France was even with the dominant Springboks two weeks ago, before an avalanche of points led to a 32-17 loss. Les Bleus bounced back with a win over Fiji, but that match was not easy for the French.

Heavily favored in this matchup against Australia, France will look to gain momentum entering the new year and head into a Six Nations competition that looks as wide open as ever.

Antoine Dupont Return Nears For France

Dupont will not be back for this match, but the French superstar — who led the country to the Rugby Sevens gold medal at the 2024 Olympics — should be returning to the field in December.

That could come as early as the first week of December when his club team hosts the Hollywoodbets Sharks on Dec. 7, a match that will stream for free on FloRugby’s YouTube channel.

Dupont’s injury allowed France to show off its depth, and the team beat Ireland mostly without him in March and captured the Six Nations title. France may have beaten the Springboks earlier this month with a healthy Dupont.
