While the eyes of the rugby world may be focused on a match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Nov. 22, there will be a match in Georgia that may have an even bigger impact on the World Rugby stage.

Georgia sits outside the top 10 of the World Rugby rankings at No. 11, while Japan is at No. 13. While Georgia has hosted the United States and Canada so far this month, picking up two tough wins, Japan has been through quite the gauntlet.

The Brave Blossoms started the month with a showdown against No. 1 South Africa and followed that with a match against No. 4 Ireland. Both of those top-5 teams — which play each other in Dublin on Nov. 22 — looked the part against Japan in 61-7 and 41-10 wins.

Japan, though, was one point shy of beating Wales in the last round, losing 24-23.

But now comes the real test for both countries.

The backdrop for all this is the 2027 Rugby World Cup draw Dec. 3. 

Georgia isn’t going to catch Italy before the draw to move into the top 10, but can Georgia stay in the No. 11 spot with a win? Is this less about world ranking points and more about proving who the second-best non-SANZAAR, non-Six Nations country is? (Fiji is No. 8 in the world.)

Japan Rugby Elevates On The World Stage

There’s a new event called the Nations Championship, and it features 12 teams from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. To be included in this tournament is to be elevated to another level of rugby — if not by tier, then certainly by status.

Japan is one of the 12 teams that will compete in the Nations Championship. This tournament exists so the sport of rugby will have aligned calendars, and it’s good for the game — and very good for the future of Japan.

Will Georgia Rugby Feel Snubbed?

Japan is included as part of the Southern Hemisphere… but Japan isn’t in the Southern Hemisphere. If you’re a fan of Georgia Rugby, you’ve probably been saying that for days now.

Georgia probably is good enough at rugby to hold its own in the Six Nations. The team is ranked higher than Wales in the World Rugby Rankings. So why the snub?

It probably has more to do with Japan being in the Pacific — like New Zealand, Australia and Fiji — and making travel and scheduling easier, but Georgia certainly has earned the opportunity for more international competitions.

Will the players actually care about this? Probably not, but it’s an interesting narrative entering the match.
