It’s East Midlands Derby Weekend in Gallagher PREM Rugby, and the Northampton Saints host the Leicester Tigers on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Franklin’s Gardens. 

The fixture doubles as a major personal milestone for Saints wing Tommy Freeman, who makes his 100th appearance in Black, Green and Gold.

Freeman debuted in 2019 against the Sale Sharks in the PREM Rugby Cup and has since become an England international and a British & Irish Lion. 

He headlines seven changes made by head coach Phil Dowson, who welcomes back fellow Lions Alex Mitchell, Fin Smith and Henry Pollock to the matchday 23. 

Mitchell and Smith resume their halfback partnership, with Pollock named among the replacements.

Oval Insights underline the Saints’ balanced start to the campaign: they lead the league in try assists (nine) and have recorded 25 dominant tackle contacts, more than any other club. 

Tom Pearson tops the competition individually in that category, while Anthony Belleau has kicked at a 91.7% success rate to stabilize Northampton’s attack.

Leicester enters the derby after a win over Harlequins and a raft of forward changes from head coach Geoff Parling, who praised the depth of his squad ahead of another intense local battle.

“The whole squad has trained well to put the team in the best position for derby day,” Parling said. “It’s great to welcome some familiar faces back into the starting lineup, such as Hanro, but as we saw last week, the bench know they’ll make a huge impact on this game.”

The Tigers’ carrying power has been among the best in the league, posting 823 carry meters and 163 post-contact meters in the latest round. 

Solomone Kata and Adam Radwan remain critical threats out wide, combining strong contact work with line-breaking pace.
