URC Introduces Independent TMO System With Hawk-Eye Technology
The URC launches an independent Hawk-Eye powered TMO process to speed up decisions, improve accuracy, and enhance the match-day experience.

The United Rugby Championship will roll out an independent Television Match Official (TMO) process this season, aiming to deliver faster and more accurate decisions on the field.
For the first time among the world’s major club competitions, TMOs will no longer rely on broadcast operators to cycle through angles. Instead, they will control Hawk-Eye technology directly, giving them instant access to every available camera feed. Touchscreen monitors will allow officials to quickly choose key angles and even view multiple shots simultaneously, cutting down delays and improving decision-making.

The new system will also support the ongoing trial of the 20-minute red card, ensuring officials have the best tools available to make high-stakes calls.
URC CEO Martin Anayi said the innovation is designed to improve both accuracy and the pace of play: “Fans and their teams want the best possible experience during the 80 minutes that means so much, and now thanks to our innovative suppliers and the support of IPVanish our league is able to implement this game-changing upgrade.”
Technology installation is already underway across the 12 Northern Hemisphere clubs, with operations phased in over the opening three rounds. Each club will use identical workstation setups. In South Africa, the system will be managed by Mobii, which has overseen TMO operations there since 2021.
The upgrade is backed by IPVanish through its parent company VIPRE Security Group, with branding set to appear during TMO reviews as part of the sponsorship.
