The DHL Stormers enter the 2025-2026 United Rugby Championship aiming to reclaim the heights they reached in the competition’s inaugural year. 

Last season, the Cape Town side finished fifth in the table with 59 points, before bowing out in the quarterfinals against Glasgow Warriors. That result underscored both their consistency and the gap they must close to return to the final stages.

Founded in 1997, the Stormers have been a flagship franchise in South African rugby. They transitioned from Super Rugby into the URC in 2021 and immediately left their mark by lifting the first title. 

Their identity has long been built on producing Springbok internationals and blending power up front with attacking flair out wide. Today, players like Damian Willemse and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu carry that tradition as they take on key playmaking roles.

Statistically, the Stormers impressed with ball in hand but lagged in defensive consistency. They scored 525 points and 68 tries, ranking among the league’s best in attack. 

Yet they finished with a tackle success rate of just 76%, the lowest in the URC. This contrast leaves them as one of the most exciting, but also unpredictable, teams entering the new season.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu represents the future, a rising fly-half who has shown composure beyond his years. Together, they give the Stormers both leadership and dynamism in pivotal positions.

An Attack Built To Score

Few teams matched the Stormers’ attacking punch in 2024–25. Their 525 points and 68 tries ranked among the top five in the league, driven by pace and support play. They also tallied 181 clean breaks and 241 offloads, keeping defenses constantly under pressure. Leolin Zas contributed heavily, finishing as one of the league’s leaders in clean breaks. For the Stormers to contend this season, maintaining this level of attacking sharpness is essential.

Discipline And Set Piece Remain Issues

The Stormers’ biggest weaknesses were their discipline and scrums. They conceded 174 penalties and were shown 10 yellow and 2 red cards. In the scrum, they won only 84% of their feeds, placing them last in the league. While their lineout was a strength at 89% success, shoring up the scrum and tightening discipline will be key to avoiding costly momentum shifts.
