The Ospreys enter the 2025–26 United Rugby Championship season looking to climb back up the standings after finishing 12th last year. 

They closed 2024–25 with eight wins but fell short of playoff contention, a familiar theme in recent seasons. While their attack produced 60 tries, defensive lapses and ill-discipline left them trailing their Welsh rivals.

This is a proud Welsh region formed in 2003 by the merger of Neath and Swansea RFC. The Ospreys quickly became a powerhouse, winning league titles in 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2012, and famously defeating Australia in 2006. Although trophies have been scarce over the last decade, “Ospreylia” remains a key talent hub for the Welsh national side.

The Ospreys were among the most efficient lineout teams in the URC last year, winning 91 percent of their throws with 273 secured. That stability gave them a platform to launch attacks, even when their scrum struggled. They won 89 of 99 scrums (90 percent) but gave up 25 penalties in the process. Improving discipline in the tight exchanges will be vital to convert lineout dominance into territorial pressure and points.

Discipline Remains A Concern

Conceding 190 penalties and collecting seven cards (six yellow, one red), the Ospreys often sabotaged their own efforts. Scrum infringements were particularly costly, with 44 offences whistled against them. For a team trying to reestablish consistency in the middle of the table, cutting down on preventable penalties could mean the difference between another lost season and a playoff push.

Dan Edwards Provides Scoring Reliability

Fly-half Dan Edwards was one of the league’s most accurate point scorers in 2024–25. He finished fourth overall with 120 points, including 28 conversions. The young kicker’s steady boot ensured Ospreys remained competitive even in tight contests. With the attack still developing, Edwards’ consistency from the tee will be crucial in capitalizing on limited scoring chances this season.
