Cardiff Rugby come into the 2025–26 United Rugby Championship season looking to climb out of the bottom tier of the table. 

The 2024–25 campaign saw them finish in the lower half once again, unable to string together consistent performances despite some encouraging moments at home in Cardiff Arms Park. 

Their season was marked by patchy attack, costly defensive lapses, and discipline issues that repeatedly put them under pressure.

Established in 2003 during Welsh rugby’s regional restructuring, Cardiff—formerly Cardiff Blues—have enjoyed memorable highs on the European stage. They won the EPCR Challenge Cup in both 2010 and 2018, becoming the first Welsh region to capture European silverware. That history underlines the club’s proud tradition, even as recent URC seasons have been difficult. Supporters still expect Cardiff to be a competitive presence, particularly in Welsh derby matches.

The squad for 2025-2026 features familiar international talent, including British & Irish Lions wing Josh Adams, alongside promising young backs like Mason Grady and Cam Winnett. With a core of experienced forwards and developing stars, Cardiff have the tools to improve, but they’ll need sharper execution across the pitch.

Attack Struggles Limit Success

Cardiff managed 409 total points and 63 tries in 2024–25, ranking in the lower half of the competition offensively. Their offloading game was limited, producing just 110, one of the lowest totals in the URC. With only 299 defenders beaten across the season, their backline rarely broke through consistently. To compete with top clubs, Cardiff’s attack will need more creativity and cutting edge.

Discipline A Costly Weakness

Discipline undermined Cardiff throughout last season. They conceded 196 penalties, ranking among the worst in the competition. That lack of control repeatedly allowed opponents to dictate territory and momentum. Cutting down infringements and improving composure under pressure is essential if Cardiff want to turn close games into wins in 2025–26.

Set Piece Holds Steady

One area of relative strength for Cardiff has been the scrum. They won 93% of their scrums last season, keeping them competitive at the set piece. The lineout was less reliable at 84%, but still functional compared to other URC sides. If Cardiff can combine solid set piece foundations with better attacking play and discipline, they may finally begin climbing back toward mid-table.
