3 things to know about Dragons RFC ahead of the 2025--26 URC

Dragons RFC enter the 2025–26 United Rugby Championship with a lot to prove after a string of disappointing campaigns. The Welsh side finished bottom of the table in both 2023–24 and 2024–25, managing just one win last year.

Despite this, the club retains a proud tradition within Welsh rugby and continues to provide opportunities for emerging talent in a competitive league.

Founded in 2003 as Newport Gwent Dragons, the club underwent several name changes before adopting its current identity as Dragons RFC in 2022. Their early years brought promise, including a third-place finish in their debut season, but more recent results have tested patience. Still, the Dragons remain a key part of the URC’s Welsh contingent and regularly compete in European competitions.

The current squad blends experienced internationals like Aaron Wainwright with younger Welsh prospects. With a fan base that continues to rally behind the team at Rodney Parade, the 2025–26 season offers another chance to upset stronger opponents and build for the future.

Aaron Wainwright Leads From The Back Row

Aaron Wainwright continues to be a cornerstone for the Dragons in the loose forward unit. His mobility and work rate make him a standout on both sides of the ball. As one of the most experienced Welsh internationals in the squad, Wainwright’s leadership will be vital if the Dragons are to steady themselves and turn narrow losses into meaningful wins. His presence provides a balance between physicality at the breakdown and dynamic play in open space.

Struggles On Attack Remain An Issue

The Dragons finished the 2024–25 season with only 335 points scored and 43 tries, the lowest totals in the competition. Their attack lacked consistency, producing fewer metres gained (5,514) and clean breaks (89) than nearly every rival. Improving creativity in the backline and execution near the try line will be essential in the new campaign. Without sharper attacking production, the team will struggle to escape the bottom of the table.

Discipline And Set Piece Execution Need Work

Discipline was a major weakness, with Dragons conceding 211 penalties last season, one of the highest figures in the URC. At the set piece, they posted an 87% lineout success rateand a 90% scrum win rate, both middling compared to league leaders. Cleaning up technical errors and avoiding unnecessary infringements will be central to improving competitiveness.
