The 2024–25 season was another tough one for Dragons RFC, as the side finished at the very bottom of the United Rugby Championship standings. They managed just one win across the campaign and struggled both at home and on the road. 

It continued a trend of lean years for the Welsh region, which has been anchored to the lower reaches of the table for much of the past decade. For supporters, the 2025–26 season brings hope of improved competitiveness and a chance to claim some key Welsh derby victories.

Founded in 2003 during the regionalization of Welsh rugby, the club began as Newport Gwent Dragons before eventually rebranding to Dragons RFC in 2022. While trophies have eluded them, the Dragons have a proud history of producing and hosting international talent. Several players from the region have been selected for the British & Irish Lions, including Michael Owen and Taulupe Faletau. This legacy provides the club with a strong identity even in challenging seasons.

Statistically, the Dragons’ 2024–25 numbers highlight the struggles. They ranked last in total points scored with just 335 across the season, managing only 43 tries. On defense, their tackle success rate was 78%, among the lowest in the competition. Set piece numbers were similarly middling, winning 87% of lineoutsand 90% of scrums.

Discipline was also a weakness, with 211 penalties conceded, one of the highest totals in the league. Improvement in all phases will be essential if the Dragons are to rise off the bottom of the table.
