3 Things To Know About Edinburgh Rugby In URC 2025-2026

Edinburgh head into the 2025–26 United Rugby Championship looking to build on a playoff campaign that reaffirmed their place among the competition’s top half. The capital club finished seventh last season with 10 wins and a quarterfinal berth.

Their blend of international experience and young Scottish talent has made them a consistent challenger.

Historically, Edinburgh are one of Scotland’s two professional sides, formed out of the city’s district roots. They were founding members of the Celtic League and have carried that tradition into the URC. With a Challenge Cup final appearance in 2015 and several playoff runs, they’ve long been considered a gritty, competitive outfit.

This season, Edinburgh’s outlook centers on sharpening their attack, maintaining defensive steel, and getting more from their set piece. Their squad features standout internationals, including two players ranked in the FloRugby Top 100, who give them the ability to turn tight matches in their favor.

Darcy Graham And Duhan van der Merwe Are Top 100 Talents

Edinburgh boast two of the most dynamic wings in the competition. Darcy Graham (No. 81) and Duhan van der Merwe (No. 88) both earned spots in FloRugby’s Top 100 list. Graham’s footwork and acceleration make him one of the league’s best at creating clean breaks, while van der Merwe brings sheer power and finishing ability. Their contrasting styles give Edinburgh a balanced and lethal threat on the edges.

A Balanced Statistical Profile

Edinburgh scored 504 points and 71 tries last season, with 422 defenders beaten across the campaign. They also produced 2,860 tackles at an 82% success rate, one of the league’s more reliable defensive marks. In the set piece, they posted a 93% scrum success rate and an 87% lineout success. This balance between attack, defense, and structure underpins their ability to compete with any side.

Discipline Remains An Area To Improve

While Edinburgh showed structure in many phases, their discipline hurt them in crucial games. They conceded 186 penalties, alongside 14 yellow cards and one red card. That placed them among the league’s most penalized sides. Cleaning up their discipline will be key to converting competitive performances into more wins, particularly against the top-tier opponents who punish mistakes.
