Ulster Rugby enter the 2025–26 United Rugby Championship season aiming to bounce back from one of their toughest campaigns in years. The Belfast-based side finished 14th in the table with seven wins and 38 points, missing out on the playoffs. 

Their season was defined by inconsistency and defensive issues, conceding 506 points across 18 matches. For a club with Ulster’s proud history and loyal support at Kingspan Stadium, last year’s struggles raised expectations for a much sharper response this season.

Founded in 1879, Ulster remain one of Ireland’s most iconic rugby institutions, with four URC titles and a European Cup to their credit. The club has traditionally been a strong developer of Irish internationals, with generations of stars passing through its ranks. 

Kingspan Stadium continues to be a fortress when the team is performing, and fans will demand improvement after a disappointing campaign. The challenge for 2025–26 will be to shore up defensive frailties, improve discipline, and climb back into playoff contention.

Statistically, Ulster scored 414 points and 59 tries in 2024–25, which left them near the bottom third of the league. Their lineout was a relative strength with 199 wins and 25 steals, one of the top totals in the URC. However, discipline was a glaring weakness: 195 penalties conceded and 14 yellow cards left them undermined in crucial games. 

Their 87 percent lineout efficiency was balanced by a 90 percent scrum success rate, but these set-piece strengths weren’t enough to offset their defensive lapses. To progress, Ulster must convert statistical competitiveness into consistent winning performances.
