Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii scored twice and Australia overcame an early deficit to defeat Argentina 28-24 on Saturday, using second-half momentum and improved discipline to close out a tight Test match.

Argentina jumped ahead early behind a pair of penalty goals from Santiago Carreras and first-half tries from Bautista Delguy and Mateo Carreras. The Pumas led 20-7 before Australia struck back with three unanswered tries to seize control in the second half.

Fraser McReight and Nic White scored Australia’s first-half tries, but it was Suaalii who turned the match with two finishes on either side of the break. Len Ikitau played provider on both, creating clean breaks and drawing defenders before offloading.

Australia Finishes Strong Behind Suaalii, Ikitau

Trailing by 13 midway through the first half, the Wallabies shifted momentum through extended possession and cleaner set-piece work. They finished with 144 carries to Argentina’s 88 and 196 passes to 112. Possession (58%) and territory (54%) leaned in Australia’s favor as the game wore on.

Australia converted all four tries, with Tom Lynagh kicking two conversions and James O’Connor adding two more after replacing Lynagh in the second half. Despite being outgained in post-contact meters (Argentina 133m to Australia 100m), the Wallabies held a 4-2 advantage in line breaks.

Set Piece and Defense Prove Crucial

Argentina’s final points came from Juan Cruz Mallia’s penalty in the 78th minute, but Australia’s defense held firm in the closing stages. The Wallabies finished with 110 tackles (16 missed), matching Argentina’s 87% tackle success rate.

Australia also controlled the scrum battle, winning all seven of their scrums compared to Argentina’s 86% success on eight attempts. Lineouts were nearly even, with Australia winning 92% of theirs and Argentina claiming all nine.

Turnovers were split evenly (13 lost apiece), but Australia edged the breakdown with six turnovers won to Argentina’s five. The Pumas also hurt themselves with a yellow card to Mateo Carreras in the 61st minute, which Australia quickly punished with a try.

The result offers Australia a much-needed boost heading into the next round of fixtures, with young stars like Suaalii and Ikitau showcasing their international quality in a composed, balanced performance.

Argentina’s Consistent Success In Recent Rugby Championship Campaigns

Argentina has won three of their last five Rugby Championship matches, with victories over Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa in that span. The 2022 season remains the only previous time they recorded multiple wins in the first three rounds of the tournament.

Lucio Cinti’s Tackle Break Impact Without Line Breaks

Argentina’s Lucio Cinti leads the 2025 Rugby Championship with 11 tackle breaks but has yet to register a line break. Remarkably, he has made at least five tackle breaks in each of his two tournament games, after doing so only once in his previous 35 Tests.

Australia Leading Rugby Championship In Kicks But Lacking Distance

Australia have kicked in play 57 times in the 2025 Rugby Championship — the most of any team — but their average kick length of 20 metres is the shortest in the competition. They have made at least 28 kicks in play in each of their last three Tests after doing so only once in their previous 11.

Argentina’s Physicality And Carry Numbers Leading The Competition

Argentina lead the 2025 Rugby Championship in carries (277) and boast the highest rate of dominant contact on carries (37%) of any team. Pablo Matera tops the individual carry count with 26, three more than any other player in the tournament.

Max Jorgensen’s Scoring and Line-Breaking Streak for Wallabies

Australia’s Max Jorgensen is on a three-Test try-scoring streak and has made at least two line breaks in each of his last six Tests. His four line breaks in the 2025 Rugby Championship are the most by any player.

Argentina Rugby's Recent Dominance Over Australia In Tests

Argentina has won three of their last four Tests against Australia, including a record-setting 67-27 victory in their most recent clash — the most points ever scored by a team against the Wallabies. The Pumas also won their last meeting with Australia on Australian soil, 34-31 in July 2023.
