Summer is wrapping up, the training grounds are in top order and the 127th season of France’s top club rugby competition is about to get underway.

Top 14 play gets going this weekend with a full slate of games – and enticing storylines for each. 

The hunts for silverware, European Rugby Champions Cup/Challenge Cup qualification and more, officially starts now, and for those that are in contention, a fast start will be crucial to their journey.

Here’s a look at the opening weekend of action on tap on the Top 14 calendar, streamed live and exclusively in the United States on FloRugby

Montauban At Stade Francais, 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6

Montauban stunned French rugby in June by securing its first promotion to the top flight since 2010 in the most unlikely circumstances, barely sneaking into the Pro D2 promotion playoffs as the sixth, and final, team in the bracket, before proceeding to storm to the final and knock off top-seeded favorite Grenoble in a massive upset. 

The club’s first Top 14 match in 15 years officially will kick off the season and take place in the capital against a Stade Francais side trying to shake off the rust from a disappointing 2024-2025 season. 

The Parisians finished just a point above the relegation places in 12th — a huge dropoff after a second-place regular-season finish in 2023-2024 — and another disastrous Top 14 campaign for one of the most storied clubs in French rugby won’t be tolerated.

Stade Francais will be motivated to right the ship, but can’t afford to take any match lightly; Montauban already has proven capable this year of being able to punch above its weight, so Les Soldats Roses must be mindful of avoiding a season-opening letdown in front of a home crowd this weekend.

Bayonne At Perpignan, 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6

Bayonne’s reputation is changing before our eyes, and those in French rugby are taking notice of a club that could be due to explode domestically — and internationally — in the coming years. 

Known for much of the past decade as a club that would bounce in and out of the Top 14 and Pro D2, the pride of France’s Basque Country made waves a year ago by qualifying for the top-flight playoffs for the first time in its history, finishing fourth and going unbeaten for the entire domestic season at the Stade Jean-Dauger. 

That placing has earned Bayonne respect, a spot in the Champions Cup and some big-name offseason transfers, including Springboks scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies and Wales flyer Gareth Anscombe - but will it be enough for L’Aviron to take the next step toward a major trophy? 

We may learn more about those aspirations this weekend as they visit Perpignan, which narrowly staved off relegation in June after finishing 13th, as they needed to beat Grenoble in the relegation playoff to stay in the top division.

Racing 92 At Lyon, 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6

What was meant to be a season of promise for Racing 92 in 2024-2025 — which included a high-profile signing of England legend and four-time British & Irish Lions star Owen Farrell — ended flat, as the club from the Paris suburbs finished 10th in the Top 14 and failed to advance to the Champions Cup knockout rounds, followed by a semifinal defeat in the Challenge Cup. 

The team that beat Racing? It was none other than Lyon, which defeated its countrymen at the Stade de Gerland before coming up short in the final to Bath from the Premiership. 

Farrell is back in England after injuries hampered his one season overseas, but the established talent is there for Racing to get back on the right track for 2025-2026 — and that starts with getting revenge against Lyon on opening weekend. 

Meanwhile at Lyon, its success in Europe has been countered by back-to-back 11th-place finishes in the Top 14, and while LOU has managed to avoid the drop zone in recent years, mediocrity in domestic rugby can stick around if poor runs of form (especially early in the season) are commonplace.

Pau At Castres, 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6

Coming off its best season since winning the regular-season title and making the final in 2021-2022, Castres finished sixth and returned to the playoffs after an emotionally trying season following the death in May of wing/flanker Josaia Raisuqe in a road accident. 

Historically, Castres’ most successful periods as of late have seemed to come in four-year spurts; the club made Top 14 finals in 2014, 2018 (which it won) and 2022, meaning that it just might be due for another surge up the table for 2025-2026. 

On the other hand, Pau hasn’t played for a domestic title since 1964, but an ongoing, extended run in the Top 14 has the pride of the Pyrenees building confidence with each year, resulting in an eighth-place finish and a trip to the Champions Cup later on in the year. 

Pau’s major weakness last year was on the defensive side of the ball (92 tries allowed in 2024-2025, tied for second-most in the competition), but if strides are shown at the Stade Pierre-Fabre this weekend against a strong Castres side, it could be an indication that Pau could be on the rise.

Toulon At Montpellier, 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6

Toulon had both a proficiency for being able to bring the house down (see its 72-point explosion in the Champions Cup Round of 16 against Saracens) and coming up just short when it mattered most last season. 

That being said, it still was a great year for Les Rouge et Noir, who finished third for their second consecutive top-4 finish domestically. 

The question that remains: What is it going to take for Toulon to get back to the level of dominance it showed just over a decade ago, when the club stormed to a three-peat of Champions Cup wins and was the undisputed king of Europe? 

The same could be said, to a lesser extent, with Montpellier; since winning the French title in 2022, Les Cistes has mostly been in turmoil, shuffling coaches and surviving a relegation playoff since. 

Manager Joan Caudullo has brought some stability, returning back to the club after helping it finish ninth a year ago, and Montpellier will try to keep things moving forward this weekend against a French heavyweight.

La Rochelle At Bordeaux-Bègles, 3:05 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6

Is La Rochelle’s magical run of success now officially over? If so, it may very well have been taken up by some fresh new blood at Bordeaux-Bègles. 

La Rochelle has come back down to Earth in recent years after back-to-back Champions Cup wins in 2022 and 2023, being knocked out of the competition last season in the Round of 16, while finishing seventh domestically, missing out on the playoffs but doing enough to retain another spot in the Champions Cup. 

As for Bordeaux-Bègles, it knows all about winning in Europe, too; back-to-back runners-up in the Top 14, Les Girondins finally got over the hump and won a major trophy by taking the Champions Cup title in May in front of over 70,000 fans in Cardiff, the club’s first since being founded after a merger of two smaller Bordeaux clubs in 2006. 

The Bordeaux-Bègles era very well may be here to stay, especially with Louis Bielle-Biarrey — Top 14’s reigning top try scorer and the Six Nations’ top player with France — showcasing his world-class talent on a weekly basis. 

Expect fireworks at the Stade Chaban-Delmas this Saturday.

Toulouse At Clermont, 3:05 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6

The three-time defending Top 14 champion, Toulouse begins its quest for a four-peat — which would be the first solely in French rugby’s professional era (since 1996) and last happened when Toulouse also did it from 1994-97 — with an away trip to Clermont-Ferrand while bringing largely the same group that both scored the most (891) and conceded the least amount (462) of points during the regular season. 

Though Toulouse will need to get through a significant portion of the season without superstar Antoine Dupont, who suffered a knee injury while representing France in the Six Nations, a huge injury crisis last season involving him and others in the squad didn’t stop the club’s successful push for a record-extending 24th domestic title. 

Meanwhile for Clermont, last season was a step forward for the club as it returned to the playoffs following a four-year absence, bowing out in the opening round to Bayonne, while simultaneously making the knockout rounds of the Champions Cup in an encouraging campaign. 

A statement victory on opening weekend against one of the most household names in rugby would go a long way toward Clermont getting back into the title picture.
