Montpellier Rugby Eyes Bounce Back | Top 14 Preview

Montpellier Hérault Rugby enters the 2025-2026 Top 14 season seeking stability after finishing last year with a 12-0-14 record.

The club showed flashes of promise but often struggled to string together consistent performances.

With a retooled roster that includes several international signings, Montpellier’s campaign will be defined by whether the team can improve its home form and challenge for a playoff spot.

The GGL Stadium faithful saw both thrilling victories and frustrating defeats last season.

Montpellier’s attack was spearheaded by a back line that showed creativity but lacked finishing in critical matches.

Defensively, the team had trouble closing games, contributing to the losing record. Still, the squad features international talent and depth, giving the team reasons to believe this year could produce better results.

Recruitment brought a mix of experience and promise.

Notable arrivals include hooker Ricky Riccitelli from New Zealand, Scottish scrumhalf Ali Price, and former Scotland fullback Stuart Hogg.

English powerhouse Billy Vunipola joins in the back row, along with Welsh lock Adam Beard. Their presence signals Montpellier’s intent to balance grit with flair, something the team has lacked in recent seasons.

The club also parted ways with veteran scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, who returned to South Africa. Filling that gap will be vital in establishing continuity at No. 9, with Price and Leo Coly expected to battle for minutes. The success of this transition could define the team’s early-season form.
