All Blacks Really Have Enjoyed Playing In Argentina

New Zealand Rugby has been nearly flawless against, and in, Argentina. Can Los Pumas change that in the 2025 Rugby Championship?

All Blacks 2025 Rugby Championship Preview

The New Zealand All Blacks look to maintain their dominance over Argentina when the sides meet in the opening round of the 2025 Rugby Championship.

The All Blacks have won 35 of their 39 tests against Los Pumas, including four of the last five, scoring an average of 42 points per game in that stretch. They also remain unbeaten in Argentina, holding a 13-0-1 record in away matches.

Argentina, however, enters with confidence after a 52-17 victory over Uruguay in their final July test.

The Pumas historically have struggled against New Zealand — their 8% win rate against the All Blacks is their lowest against any opponent faced more than four times — but recent home form has been strong.

They have won three of their last five tests in Argentina, including victories over Australia and South Africa, with only England defeating them in that span.

New Zealand has been formidable in 2025, winning nine of its last 10 tests and sweeping France 3-0 in July.

The All Blacks have won five of their last six away from home, holding opponents to exactly one try in five of their past 10 matches. However, they have not reached 30 points in any of their last four games outside New Zealand.

History Calls For Los Pumas

For Argentina, history beckons — its next victory will be their 250th in test rugby.

Los Pumas have won six matches across the last three Rugby Championships, equaling their total from all previous appearances combined, including the 2020 Tri-Nations.

Their 2024 campaign was their most prolific, averaging 3.3 tries per game and 408 meters gained per match, their best since 2019.

New Zealand Rugby Offense Has Been Dominant

New Zealand’s attacking structure remains dangerous.

The All Blacks lead The Rugby Championship sides in offloads this year with 13 per game.

Argentina has been more clinical with the skill, scoring multiple tries directly from offloads in 2024 — the only team in the competition to do so.

Will Jordan, Juan Cruz Mallia Are Players To Watch

Individual matchups add further intrigue.

Juan Cruz Mallia led all players with nine offloads in the 2024 tournament, including one break assist. Against New Zealand last August, he recorded two offloads, two tackle breaks and a try.

For the All Blacks, Rieko Ioane holds the competition record with 19 tries but has only five against Argentina and has crossed the line just twice in his last 18 tests.

Will Jordan has been in electric form, scoring 19 tries in his last 18 tests, including five in his last four matches. He has scored five tries in his last two starts against the Pumas.

Both sides have areas of momentum to build on.

For Argentina, capitalizing on attacking gains and home support could be key to breaking its winless run at home to the All Blacks.

For New Zealand, maintaining defensive discipline and leveraging its proven strike runners will be central to starting the Championship strong.

Kickoff will test whether Argentina’s recent home resurgence can trouble the competition’s most successful team — or if New Zealand’s unbeaten record on South American soil remains intact.
