The 2025 Currie Cup Premier Division kicks off July 25, marking the 87th edition of South Africa’s longest-running and most prestigious provincial rugby competition.

This year’s edition welcomes the return of the Boland Cavaliers (Kavaliers), who qualified for the Premier Division for the first time since 2016 after a strong showing in the 2025 SA Cup.
They join seven other provincial sides, including South Africa’s four United Rugby Championship affiliates — the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Western Province (DHL Stormers) — as well as the Cheetahs, Pumas and Suzuki Griquas.
Sharks Looking To Win Another Currie Cup
The Sharks return as defending champions after a dramatic 16-14 victory over the Lions in last year’s final at Ellis Park Stadium.
With that narrow win, they claimed their ninth Currie Cup title and reasserted themselves as a force in South African domestic rugby.
How Currie Cup Standings Work
This year’s competition promises to be just as intense.
Each team plays the others once in a single round-robin format, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals. Points will be awarded in standard format:
- Four for a win
- Two for a draw
- Bonus points for scoring four tries or losing by seven or fewer.
- Tiebreakers include points difference, tries difference and head-to-head metrics.
Adding to the drama, the tournament once again will be sponsored by Carling Black Label, continuing the long-standing partnership that connects the tournament with South Africa’s passionate rugby fanbase.
