FloRugby Rugby Recap July 14th 2025

Scotland put on a powerful forward-driven performance to cruise past Manu Samoa 41-12 at Eden Par on Friday, marking one of its most convincing wins over the Pacific Islanders.

Hooker George Turner capped the night with Scotland’s seventh try in the 75th minute, driving over from a maul to seal the emphatic win and underline the visitors’ dominance in the pack.

The Scots stormed out to a 22-0 lead by halftime with tries from Ewan Ashman, Rory Hutchinson, Arron Reed and Kyle Steyn.

Ashman opened the scoring in the eighth minute, finishing off a maul after Scotland had pressured Samoa inside 5 meters. Hutchinson added a second try a minute later, thanks to a pinpoint grubber from Stafford McDowall.

Reed's 31st-minute finish showcased Scotland’s sharp backline movement, while Steyn’s 35th-minute try punished Samoa's fringe defence as the visitors built a commanding lead.

Scotland’s second half started no differently.

Grant Gilchrist powered through just after the break, before Samoa finally got on the board.

Lock Benjamin Petaia Nee-Nee intercepted a pass and sprinted in for Samoa’s first try in the 51st minute, cutting the deficit to 29-5.

But any thoughts of a Samoan comeback were short-lived.

Kyle Rowe responded swiftly with an acrobatic finish in the 54th minute, restoring Scotland’s momentum.

Samoa’s second try came through Top 14 standout Duncan Paia’aua in the 63rd minute after a slick backline move, but the result already was beyond doubt.

Turner’s late try from yet another Scottish maul wrapped up the scoring at 41-12.

It was a statement win for Gregor Townsend’s side, which, despite losing several players to the British and Irish Lions and to injury during the Pacific tour, demonstrated depth and cohesion throughout.

Samoa, by contrast, was plagued by turnovers and defensive lapses, especially around the fringes, and couldn’t capitalize on its few attacking opportunities.

With the All Blacks looming for France on Saturday, and the Lions preparing to face Australia, Friday’s clash served as a showcase of Northern Hemisphere depth and Scotland’s ability to deliver with a reshuffled squad.

Scotland Rugby Has Made It To Eden Park

Why Is Scotland Rugby Playing Manu Samoa At Eden Park?

The match is being played in the National Stadium of New Zealand, Eden Park and not at Apia Park in Samoa due to major renovations being made to Samoa's national stadium.

Eden Park Is One Of The Best Rugby Stadiums In The World

The All Blacks' national stadium sits 60,000 fans for rugby matches and was founded in 1900.

The All Blacks are simply dominant in Eden Park. The New Zealand national team hasn't lost at Eden Park in 31 years, or back in July 1994.

The All Blacks have won 50 straight matches at Eden Park.

That type of lore has made Eden Park one of the most famous rugby venues in the world.

Scotland is no stranger to playing in famous stadiums, as the Scots' national stadium is Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.
