Bath Rugby clinched its first EPCR Challenge Cup title since 2008 with a comprehensive 37-12 victory over Lyon Olympique Universitaire at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

Despite a fourth-minute try from Ethan Dumortier giving Lyon an early lead, the French side fizzled out—held scoreless for the rest of the first half—and managing just one more try in the second.

Bath, undeterred by two yellow cards and an early deficit, responded with strength. 

Tries from Tom Dunn, Max Ojomoh, Beno Obano, and man of the match Ben Spencer steadily built the lead for Bath. 

Finn Russell contributed a handful of conversions and three penalty goals, adding a significant piece of silverware to his career.

Lyon’s improbable run to the final—toppling the likes of Racing 92 along the way—met a hard stop in Cardiff as Bath takes home the 2025 Challenge Cup.

Bath Rugby Wins EPCR Challenge Cup Title

Final: Bath 37, Lyon 12

Bath Rugby demolished Lyon, winning 37-12 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, to take home the Challenge Cup.

Lyon struck first, within four minutes of the start of the game, but was held scoreless for the rest of the first half. Lyon mustered a try in the second half, but that was it from Le LOU. 

Bath Rugby slowly but surely padded on points, with tries from man of the match Ben Spencer, Beno Obano, and Max Ojomoh. 

Bath wins its first Challenge Cup since 2008. 

With the exception of the Premiership Rugby Cup earlier this year, this is the first major trophy for Finn Russell since the Glasgow Warriors won the Guinness Pro12 title in 2015.

Bath Rugby's Last Appearance In Challenge Cup Final

Bath Rugby has reached the Challenge Cup Final on four prior occasions, securing victory just once—in 2008—with a win over the Worcester Warriors (24-16) to claim their first major trophy in a decade.

Bath's most recent appearance in the final came in 2014, but it ended with a 30-16 loss to the Northampton Saints. Despite a strong start, Bath succumbed to a late surge from the Saints.

Interestingly, while Bath returns to the Challenge Cup spotlight, the Northampton Saints have advanced to the Champions Cup Final this season.
