Players Who Matter In Bath Rugby Vs. Lyon: Scrumhalf Ben Spencer

Bath Rugby captain Ben Spencer will lead his side onto the pitch at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, this Friday, as the Blue, Black and White face Lyon in the EPCR Challenge Cup final.

The match, which will stream live exclusively on FloRugby for fans in North America and U.S. territories, marks another milestone in the career of one of English rugby’s most consistent performers.

Born on July 31, 1992, in Stockport, England, Benjamin Thomas Spencer is no stranger to big occasions.

The experienced scrumhalf, who currently plies his trade in the Premiership with Bath and has represented England on the international stage, has built a reputation for delivering when it matters most.

Spencer’s rugby journey began with Manchester RFC, before a breakout season with Cambridge (2010-2011) earned him a move to Saracens in 2011.

Over nearly a decade in North London, he carved out an impressive résumé, helping the club to four Premiership titles, three European Rugby Champions Cups and an Anglo-Welsh Cup.

Among the highlights was his last-minute penalty that sealed the 2015 Anglo-Welsh Cup final and a try in Saracens’ 2019 Premiership triumph over Exeter.

His move to Bath in 2020 marked a new chapter—one in which he quickly emerged as both a leader and playmaker.

Named club captain, Spencer has become the heartbeat of Johann van Graan’s resurgent side.

In the 2023-2024 campaign, he led Bath to its first Gallagher Premiership final in nearly a decade and was rewarded with a spot in the Premiership Team of the Season.

On and off the field, Spencer has shown commitment to the club's long-term vision. He recently signed a new three-year contract that will keep him at the Rec until the summer of 2028.

"We have a special group of players and staff, and I believe we’re only just scratching the surface of what we can achieve," Spencer said.

Internationally, Spencer has worn the rose at every level, beginning with the England U20s and Saxons. He earned his first senior cap in 2018 and was called up to the 2019 Rugby World Cup squad, featuring in the final against South Africa.

In 2024, he made his first England start in the Autumn Nations Series against New Zealand and was recalled to the Six Nations squad in early 2025.

Spencer’s leadership, tactical awareness and big-game pedigree make him the ideal man to guide Bath in its pursuit of European silverware.

Van Graan describes him as “a world-class player” and “a true family man” whose ability to inspire those around him has proven invaluable.

As Bath prepares for Friday’s final in Cardiff, the team will be counting on Spencer to once again deliver under the spotlight, just as he has done throughout a storied career.
