The city of Lyon once again will take center stage in the world of international rugby, as EPCR confirmed Thursday that OL Stadium has been selected to host the 2027 Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup Finals.

This marks the second time Lyon will welcome rugby’s most prestigious club competitions, following a sold-out and widely praised Finals weekend in 2016.

The decision comes after a fiercely competitive tender process overseen in partnership with The Sports Consultancy, which attracted an unprecedented number of bids from across Europe.

The 59,186-capacity OL Stadium, home to Olympique Lyonnais, edged proposals from six other cities, underscoring its stature as one of Europe’s top-tier sporting venues.

Known for its modern design and commitment to sustainability, the stadium operates entirely on renewable energy, with ISO 20121 certification as part of EPCR’s impACT sustainability strategy.

“We are delighted Lyon will be the host city for the 2027 Finals weekend,” said Dominic McKay, EPCR Chairman. “Given the high standard of all the bids received, the decision was both extensive and challenging. Lyon not only offers a world-class stadium but also a rich sporting culture and a strong commitment to the future of rugby.”

The OL Stadium has rapidly become a marquee destination for major international events.

Following its successful hosting of matches during the 2023 Rugby World Cup and as part of the 2024 Olympic program, the venue has built a strong reputation for delivering on the global stage.

John Textor, CEO of Eagle Football Group, welcomed the return of EPCR's showpiece events to Lyon.

“EPCR was the first major event organizer to take a chance with OL Stadium shortly after its inauguration,” Textor said. “This new collaboration is a validation of that longstanding trust, and our entire community is overjoyed to relive the amazing experiences of the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup.”

French venues have hosted the Champions Cup final five times, highlighting the country’s deep connection to the sport.

In the 2016 edition held in Lyon, Saracens triumphed over Racing 92 to claim its third European title, while Montpellier edged Harlequins in the Challenge Cup final.

Lyon’s selection as host city for 2027 adds to an exciting calendar of future EPCR Finals.

Cardiff’s Principality Stadium will stage the 2025 Finals, while Bilbao’s San Mamés Stadium -site of the first Finals held outside the Six Nations countries - will host in 2026.

“French rugby is in an incredibly exciting place,” McKay added. “Lyon’s dedication to nurturing the sport and inspiring future generations makes it the perfect stage for what promises to be an unforgettable weekend of rugby.”

Ticketing details and the official dates for the 2027 Finals weekend will be announced at a later time. Fans from around the world can expect a spectacular blend of elite rugby, culture and hospitality in one of Europe’s most dynamic cities.
