Springboks Confirm Return Of Felix Jones To Coaching Staff
Former England coach Felix Jones returns to South Africa as an assistant, reuniting with Rassie Erasmus after past World Cup successes in 2019 and 2023.
Former England defense coach Felix Jones will re-join South Africa’s coaching staff as an assistant next week, marking his return to the Springboks after helping them secure World Cup titles in 2019 and 2023.
Jones, 37, stepped down from his role with England in December, reportedly disillusioned with Steve Borthwick’s coaching setup.
His appointment sees him reunite with Rassie Erasmus, who recently returned as South Africa’s head coach following Jacques Nienaber’s departure to Leinster.

“We are delighted to welcome Felix back and excited to see him pick up where he left off in 2023,” Erasmus said. “He was a vital cog in the coaching team from 2019 to 2023, and his experience, professionalism and work ethic will make him a great addition.”
The former Ireland wing initially joined South Africa’s staff in 2019, contributing to their World Cup-winning campaign in Japan. His tactical acumen and ability to analyse opposition teams played a crucial role in their success.
Erasmus believes Jones’ recent experience with England will provide fresh insight for the Springboks as they prepare for a challenging international season.
“After spending time in England, his knowledge of Six Nations opposition and other international teams will add immense value,” Erasmus said. “As a team, we know we must keep improving if we want to remain among the best in the world and give ourselves the best chance to defend our World Cup title in 2027.”
Jones is one of three new appointments to Erasmus’ backroom staff, joining physiotherapist Lance Lemmetjies and team dietician Robyn Moore.
With South Africa aiming to maintain their dominance on the global stage, Jones' return is expected to bolster their preparations for upcoming international competitions.
