One of the world’s best professional rugby leagues returns Feb. 14 for the 2025 season, as the new Super Rugby campaign begins. 

Super Rugby, armed with a new schedule format, played its first season in 1996 when SANZAR was formed and now features 11 teams from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and other Pacific Islands. 

Loaded with All Blacks and Wallabies on the rosters throughout the league, Super Rugby joins the likes of the United Rugby Championship, Top 14 and the Premiership as one of the world’s best rugby competitions. 

This year, the league plays its first matches on Valentine's Day, and that includes the NSW Waratahs.

What Was The NSW Waratahs' Super Rugby Record in 2024?

The team from Sydney, Australia, went 2-0-12 in 2024, finishing last in the league and failing to qualify for the playoffs. 

The Waratahs, though, have regrouped entering 2025. 

The club had a big offseason, adding Rob Leota, who was the captain of the Melbourne Rebels, who were booted from Super Rugby this offseason. 

Leota joins another newcomer, Joseph Sua'ali'i, who has an interesting and, to some, controversial journey to the Waratahs. 

The 21-year-old made his Wallabies debut in the Autumn Nations in 2024, being named the "Man of the Match" in Australia's upset win over England. 

How Many Times Have The NSW Waratahs Won The Super Rugby Championship?

The Waratahs won the 2014 Super Rugby title, beating the Crusaders in the final, 33-32. It was one of the best finals in history.

Bernard Foley converted a penalty kick in the 80th minute, just four minutes after the Crusaders took the lead, to seal the win. 

How Many Wallabies Are On The Waratahs?

There were seven players on the Waratahs 2024 roster who played for the Wallabies in 2024, not including Joseph Sua'ali'i and Leota. That includes Wallabies star Angus Bell.

Who Coaches The Waratahs?

Dan McKellar was hired as the head coach of the Waratahs last summer. 

The former Leicester Tigers and Brumbies head coach returns to Super Rugby after a two-year stretch in the Gallagher Premiership. 

Before going to the Tigers, he coached the Brumbies from 2018-2022 and also was an assistant for the Wallabies from 2021-2023. 

Where Do The Waratahs Play?

The New South Wales Waratahs are one of two teams in the ACT, the other being the Brumbies. 

They are, however, the only Super Rugby team in Australia's largest city, Sydney. 

The team plays in Allianz Stadium.
