Herschel Jantjies To Join Bayonne
Springboks scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies is set to leave the DHL Stormers at the end of the current season to take up a contract with French side Bayonne.
The 27-year-old, who played a key role in South Africa’s 2019 Rugby World Cup triumph, has been granted an early release from his Stormers contract, which ran until 2026.
Jantjies, a product of Kylemore and a lifelong member of the Stormers setup, first donned the team’s blue and white jersey at the U13 level. He made his senior debut in 2018 and has since amassed 86 caps, becoming a cornerstone of the Cape Town franchise.
“This is a life-changing opportunity for me and my family,” said Jantjies, acknowledging the impact the Stormers had on his development. “The DHL Stormers mean so much to me, and I wouldn’t be here without the support of my coaches and teammates.”
Director of rugby John Dobson reflected on Jantjies’ legacy, describing him as an inspiration to future generations. Dobson also left the door open for Jantjies’ return, citing the tradition of former players coming back to finish their careers in Cape Town.
“We have seen so many stalwarts return to the blue and white," Dobson said. "We hope Herschel does the same after his time in France."
Jantjies’ departure creates opportunities for rising stars Imad Khan and Asad Moos.
Dobson expressed confidence in their potential, stating, “The future is bright with the talent coming through. Herschel’s journey shows what is possible.”
Duhan Van der Merwe Stays With Edinburgh Rugby
Amid rumors of a move to La Rochelle or a return to South Africa, Scotland’s all-time leading try-scorer Duhan van der Merwe has reportedly decided to remain in Edinburgh.
The 29-year-old winger, celebrated for his power and pace, has scored 30 tries in 44 international appearances, surpassing Darcy Graham’s tally.
Van der Merwe’s decision to stay is a significant boost for Scottish rugby, particularly as he was linked to big-money offers from French clubs and his former team, the Stormers.
The 6-foot-4 winger has become an integral part of the Edinburgh setup, and his commitment ensures stability for the club heading into the next season.
Munster Rugby Secures Coaching Stability
Munster has locked in key members of its coaching staff, with attack coach Mike Prendergast and defense coach Denis Leamy both signing two-year extensions. The pair were instrumental in Munster’s United Rugby Championship victory in 2022 and have been central to the team’s resurgence.
Prendergast’s extension, announced shortly after Leamy’s, reflects Munster’s desire to maintain momentum under head coach Graham Rowntree’s leadership. Both coaches bring a wealth of experience and continuity to the Irish powerhouse.
Ulster Rugby Lands Juarno Augustus
Ulster Rugby has made a statement signing by acquiring Juarno Augustus from Northampton Saints.
The 26-year-old No. 8, a former World Rugby Junior Player of the Year, will join the Belfast-based club on a three-year deal starting next summer.
Augustus, nicknamed “Trokkie” for his powerful ball-carrying, played a key role in Northampton’s Premiership-winning campaign last season.
“He’s in his prime and has been a top-class player in the Premiership,” Ulster head coach Richie Murphy said.
Ulster’s general manager, Bryn Cunningham, highlighted Augustus’ physicality and explosiveness as key attributes, calling him “a huge physical presence in the back row.”
Liam Williams Returns To Saracens
Wales international Liam Williams is heading back to Saracens for a second stint after spending a year in Japan with the Kubota Spears.
The versatile back-three player, who has earned 91 international caps, joins the injury-hit club until the end of the season.
Williams previously played for Saracens between 2017 and 2020, contributing to the team’s Champions Cup and Premiership successes.
“Liam had an incredible impact during his first spell here,” said Saracens Director of Rugby Mark McCall. “Bringing him back was a no-brainer.”
Williams cited his fond memories of the club as a motivating factor for his return.
“Saracens has a special culture, and I’m excited to help them achieve their goals this season,” he said.
Other Notable Rumors
Springboks fullback Willie le Roux was spotted in Bath, sparking speculation about a move, despite his contract with the Bulls running until 2025.
Racing 92 is eyeing Wallabies No. 8 Rob Valetini as a marquee signing. However, Valetini’s long-term contract with Rugby Australia could complicate negotiations.
Ulster scrum-half John Cooney, nearing the end of his contract, is rumored to be exploring new opportunities for the 2025-2026 season.
