Ulster Rugby has confirmed that Ireland sevens star Zac Ward will join the province's senior men's squad for an "extended trial" leading up to the autumn international window. 

The 25-year-old Ballynahinch native recently impressed at the Olympic Games in Paris, scoring four tries to help Ireland’s sevens team secure a sixth-place finish.

Ward's performances in the sevens circuit earned him recognition as the Men's Sevens Players' Player of the Year at the Rugby Players Ireland awards in Dublin earlier this year.

Ulster’s Head of Rugby Operations and Recruitment, Bryn Cunningham, expressed excitement about Ward's addition to the squad. 

“It’s great to be welcoming Zac into the squad as we ramp up preparations for the new season,” Cunningham said. “Zac is coming off the back of a successful period with the national Sevens team, and we feel this is a good opportunity for him to bring his skills and qualities into the group over the coming weeks.”

Ward will have the chance to prove himself as Ulster gears up for their first full season under new head coach Richie Murphy. The team also has bolstered its squad with the signings of former New Zealand U20 fly-half Aidan Morgan and South African wing Werner Kok.

Ulster is set to face Benetton and Exeter in pre-season friendlies, before kicking off their 2024-2025 United Rugby Championship campaign against defending champion Glasgow at home on Sept. 21.
