If not for Leinster Rugby, Toulouse, or Stade Toulousain, would be on the verge of something special in the rugby world. 

Even with Leinster around, the French squad still is. 

No European club has won more EPCR Champions Cups than Toulouse. In fact, no professional rugby club has won more championships than Toulouse, full stop. 

Among the four most prominent leagues in the world, the Gallagher Premiership, the United Rugby Championship,  Top 14 and the Southern Hemisphere’s Super Rugby (the last three of those leagues stream on FloRugby in the United States), no team has won more  domestic league more than Toulouse. Stade Toulousain has done it 22 times since 1912 and 10 times since 1996.

That’s 15 domestic and Champions Cup titles alone since the modern professional era began in the mid-1990s. Only once since the Champions Cup has been played has Toulouse failed to be in the field (that was in 2018).

The latest Champions Cup win was in 2021 when they beat fellow Top 14 rival La Rochelle in Twickenham Stadium in London. Superstar Antoine Dupont helped his team win and won the Champions Cup Player of the Year on the way. 

But the last two seasons Toulouse’s season has come to an end at the hands of Leinster Rugby in the knockout stage.

That includes last season, which was the same year that Toulouse would go on to beat La Rochelle, the EPCR Champions, in the Top 14 Final 29-26. 

Since 2021 the only teams to beat Toulouse in a knockout stage in either the Champions Cup or the Top 14 have been Castres in the semifinals of Top 14 in 2022 and Leinster. 

Currently, Toulouse sits atop of the Top 14 standings with just one week left in the regular season that starts the last week of May. 

Toulouse is hoping to do what it did in 2021 when it won both. Here’s a look back at all the times Toulouse has won the Champions Cup. 

Toulouse 21, Cardiff Rugby 18, 1996 Champions Cup Final

Toulouse won the first Champions Cup in Cardiff, Wales at National Stadium to claim the first European Professional Club Rugby Championship. They did it grand fashion, needing extra time and a winning penalty pick from Christophe Deylaud to grab the win. 

Toulouse 22, Perpignan 17, 2003 Champions Cup Final

Played in Dublin at the famous Lansdowne Road, Toulouse beat Top 14 counterpart Perpignan to claim title No. 2. Yann Delaigue hit five penalty kicks and converted on the only try of the game to power Toulouse. 

Toulouse 18, Stade Francais 12, 2005 Champions Cup Final

Another extra time classic, Champions Cup No. 3 featured a game played in Scotland at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh and featured no tries. All the points were scored on kicks, including a penalty kick in the 81st minute by Frédéric Michalak and drop kick in the 91st minute. 

Toulouse 21, Biarritz 19, 2010 Champions Cup Final

Toulouse lost in the 2008 final to Munster but returned two years later to the Final. Played in Paris at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, this is the only Champions Cup Toulouse has won in its home country. Led by Hooker William Servat, Toulouse held off it’s Top 14 counter Biarritz after allowing a try in the 73 minute. 

Toulouse 22, La Rochelle 17, 2021 Champions Cup Final 

After the 2010 Champions Cup, Toulouse didn’t return to the Final for 11 years. In that time, the club even missed a Champions Cup. Though the club won the Top 14 title three times in those 11 years, they failed to reach the Champions Cup finals. They event saw Top 14 rival Toulon when three straight Champions Cups from 2013-2015, the only team to do so. 

But powered by Antoine Dupont, Toulouse beat a rising La Rochelle club, one that would win the next two Champions Cups, by five points. Romain Ntamack made five penalty kicks and converted on a Juan Cruz Mallía try as Toulouse held back a late try from La Rochelle in the 72nd minute.

After losing to Leinster Rugby in the semifinals in 2023 in the Champions Cup, Toulouse a few months later beat La Rochelle in Stade de France to win its 22nd Top 14 title and 10th since 1996.

Where Is the Investec Champions Cup Final, EPCR Challenge Cup Final in 2025?

Cardiff, Wales takes over hosting duties for the EPCR's biggest weekend in 2025. Principality Stadium will host the two finals on a date yet to be announced. It'll be the first time since 2014 that Wales's capital has hosted the finals.
