Munster Rugby Confirms Signing Of Irish International Billy Burns

United Rugby Championship defending champion Munster have confirmed the signing of Irish international fly-half Billy Burns.

Joining the southern province from northern rival Ulster, the 29-year-old will compete with current Irish fly-half incumbent Jack Crowley for the starting fly-half berth.

In addition to his competition with Crowley, Burns will act as an experienced mentor for the wave of talented young fly-halves coming through the Munster setup.

Speaking about Burns’ signing, head coach Graham Rowntree said the seven-times capped international expressed his excitement at how Munster plays during their meeting ahead of his signing.

The fly-half has made 107 Ulster appearances since joining from Gloucester in 2018. He made his Ireland debut against Wales in 2020 and has earned seven caps.

Prior to joining Ulster, Burns made 101 appearances for Gloucester after making his debut as a 17-year-old. Born in Bath, he qualifies for Ireland through his grandfather.

Burns will replace fellow Irish International Joey Carbery, who already has confirmed that he will be departing the province to join French club Bordeaux-Begles next season.

Elsewhere, veteran prop John Ryan signed a one-year contract extension, with the tighthead prop making 217 Munster appearances since his debut in September 2011.
