Penn High School and Royal Irish won the Midwest High School championships in the two major categories in Elkhart, IN, on Sunday.

Single-School
In a clash between two single-school teams ranked in the top 10, No. 6 Penn defeated No. 1 St. Ignatius 22-13 in the final.

Led by captain Will Vakalahi, who continues to punish defenses, and helped by a stiff wind, Penn ran out to a 22-5 halftime lead.

St. Ignatius, with the wind at its backs came back in the second half, with a try from Michael Mangan and a penalty by fullback Declan Boldy.

But Penn held on for the title.

Though his team will likely be unseated from its No. 1 slot this week, St. Ignatius head coach Dan Arbeznik said his team will be back.

"We had our chances in the second half," Arbeznik said. "We had several trips inside their five-meter, but came away with no points. Penn defended really well when it mattered."

High School Club
Meanwhile, Royal Irish once again won the High School Club bracket comfortably. After outscoring their first two opponents 133-11 in shortened games a day prior, the Royal Irish took care of a solid Carroll team 44-10 on Sunday.

The Royal Irish have been shorthanded all year, but they are getting solid performances, including from Gabe Coleman, Jack Kafka, Grant Hakanson, and Max Ney.

"We played pretty well," Royal Irish head coach Scott Peterson said. "We're starting to jell with who we've got."

This sets up the Boys National Championships on May 18-20. The Royal Irish have won nationals three times since 2012 and finished second twice. The last time they didn't make the national final was 2011. This win is a nice boost as they look to the big tournament in Kansas City, MO.

Penn has never won the single-school title, though it has finished in the top four six times in the last nine years. After upending top-ranked St. Ignatius, Penn may be thought of as a major contender this year, but Sacramento Jesuit might have something to say about that.
