In their first home match in a month, the Austin Huns shook off a slow start to dominate the Dallas Harlequins 89-5 on Saturday.

The Huns were plagued by knock-ons and penalties early in their fifth Red River Conference match of the season but were still able to build a 27-5 lead to close the first half. After making minor adjustments to their lineup, the refocused Huns returned to the field and surged to 10 uncontested tries to secure their season sweep against the Harlequins.

Most importantly, Saturday's win also gave the Huns a four-point lead atop the Red River standings.

"I am happy with the win, and we will take the five division points and bank it," Huns head coach Eugene Eloff said in a team release. "I am, however, concerned about our execution and concentration abilities. I knew it would be a disruptive game. There is an old saying that states, 'A team is as good as your opponents.' But I think if you are a professional team you have to excel above your opponents and be more accurate and clinical in execution."

A big spark for the high-scoring Huns was flanker Hanco Germishuys, who had four tries in the match. Originally from South Africa, Hanco was an offseason acquisition and previously spent time playing with the USA Eagles development squads, including in the Americas Rugby Championship.

As the Harlequins (1-4 RRC) struggled to keep pace with the Huns (4-1 RRC), the second half brought crisper, faster passes as well as a lot better movement and positioning without the ball for the hosts.

"There are many positives to take from this game, like our offloading, which is great at this stage," Eloff said. "On the other hand, some of the basics are not in place; unforced errors need to be improved. I am looking forward to the next opportunity to test our team against good sides."

The Huns will look to keep their lead in the standings in a tough matchup at the second-place Dallas Reds on April 8. In their previous matchup on Feb. 4, the Huns held off the Reds 24-18 at home. The Huns will then step out of conference play on April 15 to host the Glendale Raptors, a team that beat the Huns 41-10 last month.
