The Chesapeake Conference continues to be a conference full of close games.

Not every game has been tightly contested so far this season, but every week there's at least one nail-biter. On Saturday, it was Virginia Tech that earned a dramatic 19-18 win over James Madison at home to improve to 2-0. JMU led 18-7 in the second half, but a Hokies try made it 18-12. And then, as time expired, Virginia Tech lock Bobby McDonnell took the ball down the weakside and offloaded to set up a try.

That made it 18-17 for JMU, but then fullback Brian O'Neal stepped up and whacked over the tough conversion attempts to win the game for the Hokies by one point. Virginia Tech head coach Paul Caron said his forward pack set the platform and the tone all day, and he couldn't single anyone out. However, lock and captain Kelly Fernandi has been inspirational all of this young season.

Coming off a loss to Mary Washington last week, Towson University also earned a tight 37-31 victory against Virginia on Saturday.

"We were not happy with our result against Mary Washington," Towson team president Matt Commodari said. "We wanted to come out and get back on the winning track."

Commodari said the team's biggest improvement was in line speed on defense.

"We saw the film against UMW and the line speed wasn't there, and we were much better this time," he said.

Mike Morris moved from the backs to the forwards, and he helped spark a united, powerful performance from the front eight.

Meanwhile, things weren't quite so close with Mary Washington, which has exploded through its opening games. The Mothers defeated Georgetown 69-12 on Saturday at home. Georgetown defended doggedly, but UMW worked patiently to produce try after try. Fullback Bradlee Nicholls scored three tries and scrumhalf Harry Masters scored two. No. 8 Matthew Gordon led the defensive effort. Center Mattson Bueche was the player of the game, although flanker Philip Harrison was also very good.

UMW is now 2-0 and has scored 50 or more in both games.
