The 2017-18 season is almost upon us, and it's time to rank the DI-level rugby teams.

As was previously the policy on Goff Rugby Report, D1A and D1AA teams are ranked as one. This is because: A) some D1AA teams are still very competitive against D1A teams -- that's why we see D1AA teams move to D1A every year; B) there are teams, such as Central Washington and Navy, that are in a sort of no-man's land and they need a place to be ranked; and C) ranking just D1A would be something of an issue when this writer contributes to the official D1A rankings run by USA Rugby and used for playoff seeding purposes.

So we mix them all together, but not surprisingly, D1A teams dominate. As a result, we'll throw in a periodic D1AA ranking just to spice things up. We base our preseason rankings on history, what the team looks like based on conversations with coaches, and, sometimes a little guesswork.

It's going to work out, promise.
